Frequently asked questions
What is a Part 107 certificate?
Anyone flying a drone for commercial purposes in the US must hold an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate under 14 CFR Part 107. Pilots pass an FAA knowledge test and must complete recurrent training every 24 calendar months to stay current.
How do you verify pilots?
We look up each pilot in the FAA Airmen Inquiry database, collect a photo of their certificate, track their recurrent training date, and review a certificate of insurance (COI) showing at least $1M in liability coverage. The date we checked is shown on their profile.
Why does airspace matter on Long Island?
Long Island has a lot of controlled airspace. Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) is surrounded by Class C airspace, Republic (FRG) in Farmingdale has Class D, and JFK and LaGuardia Class B airspace extends over much of western Nassau. Flying in controlled airspace requires FAA authorization, usually through LAANC, and some spots have low or zero altitude grids.
What does "we handle the airspace check" mean?
Before we match your job we look up the address, identify the controlling airspace and the LAANC grid ceiling, and flag anything that needs extra authorization or might not be flyable. Your pilot remains responsible for getting the authorization and flying legally.
What insurance do pilots carry?
Every listed pilot must carry drone liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 and provide a current certificate of insurance. Ask your pilot if you need to be named as an additional insured.
Does it cost anything to request a pilot?
No. Requests and matching are free for clients. You pay the pilot directly for the job.
How do pilots pay DroneHireHQ?
Founding pilots pay nothing for 6 months. After that, pilots pay 8% or $15 per booked job, whichever is lower. There are no lead fees.
Who owns the photos?
Usually the client receives a license to use the photos and the pilot keeps the right to use them in their portfolio. Confirm terms with your pilot before the flight.
Which areas do you cover?
All of Nassau and Suffolk County, from the Queens line to Montauk and Orient Point.
